There are many superstitions concerning ghosts today. A ghost is basically meant to be a person’s spirit trapped in the real world. I myself do not believe in ghosts or spirits. I’ve just never had an experience where I have been encountered by one or belived one was in my presence. I read on a website about superstitions concerning ghosts and mirrors. It was quite interesting. Some superstitions said, if you stare between two tall white candles you might see the spirit of a loved one who has passed away and their soul is stuck in your mirror, always cover a haunted mirror during a thunderstorm because lightning will release the ghosts, and if someone sees their reflection in a mirror from a room where someone has recently died, they will die soon too. All these are of course very creepy, but nothing too serious as to something I would be afraid of or believe. My family doesn’t really have any particular sayings or beliefs concerning ghosts and that may be the reason I don’t believe in them. Most places considered to be haunted today are of course any graveyard, churches at night, old abandoned houses, basements, and pretty much creepy places in the dark. I believe most people are so fascinated with ghosts because they either grew up hearing ledgends and superstitions from their family or just get stuck in a situation where they are so creeped out of they’re mind that they start seeing ( or think they’re seeing ) ghosts or spirits or some haunted object. Personally I am not that psyched about ghosts and creepy things. I even hate scary movies; I can’t handle the nightmares I have that night when I go to bed.

All characters in the Wizard of Oz have their own allegorical meanings. The main character, Dorothy, represents a person who is helplessly trying to find meaning to the things around her. The lion represents a timid and cowardly person looking for courage. The scare crow represents a confused person who is looking for knowledge and a brain. The tin-man represents an emotionless person who just wants to find a personality and a heart. These three characters who all wish to have courage, a brain, and a heart find out in the end that they already posess those traits in themselves, they just have to find it; not to be given to by the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy of course also finds her way as well, particularly back home, and appreciates everything she has and everyone she cares about; even when she realizes it was all a dream.

Self-image is the personal view we have of ourselves. One of the links I found through Google said, “Psychological Aspects: Your Self-Image and Plastic Surgery.” I thought this was ironic because it reminded me of the You-Tube video Mrs.Roper showed us last week on self image and how girls today are geing shown all these things they can improve on their bodies through Plastic Surgery. The article said, “Plastic Surgery, whether cosmetic or reconstructive, encourages and promotes a strong, positive self-image.” I can understand in serious, “reconstructive” situations where you would need Plastic Surgery, but the “cosmetic,” not-so-serious Plastic Surgery some people go too far with. I read another interesting article where a TV show host interviewed Katie Ford, head of Ford Models, and emphasized that “a model is thin because she was born that way—no amount of dieting or exercising will change a woman’s natural shape.” After this, the TV show host interviewed one of the models who ironically says, “We’re starving ourselves to fit into their clothes.” Now isn’t that pathetic? I belive young ladies and even young men should be happy with the way God make them. If they want to exercise to be healthy and eat health, that’s great! But girls under starving diets and guys overloading on steroids to fill the media’s perfect “self-image” is not good and by no means healthy and I do not agree with it.

After watching the first part of Pride and Predjudice I believe the theme is that the only thing people care about is money and family status. Material wealth and social standing must have been a big thing during the 19th century. I believe some people are motivated by the same things today but not nearly as bad as this movie portrayed the 19th century. But I did like this movie and I really wish we could finish it

William Shakespear was born in April 26, 1564. At age 18, he married a young lady named AnneHathaway. They had 3 children together, Susanna, and two twins, Hamnet and Judith. During his lifetime he wrote 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narratives, and several others, including tragedies. His fame did not rise to his present heights until the 19th century. _Shakespear died April 23, 1616. Today, as the world’s 3rd richest person (as of 2008) I believe Bill Gates is a good example of a Renaissance Man because his developed knowledge, social accomplishments, anddanddd the arts. Bill Gates is a very successful man and the chairman of Microsoft, the software company he helped found. He has held positions of CEO and software architect during his career at Microsoft and still remains the largest shareholder. He has also authored and codo-authored several books. Having said this, I think Mr.Gates is a good example of a Renaissance Man.

I have never used a blog as a class assignment before, so this is a first for me. I’ve heard of college professors having class blogs and posting study guides for his/her students, but not high school. I think it’s really neat and futuristic. I’m looking forward to expressing myself through my class blog and reading my classmate’s thoughts.
